Roadside assistance and cell service aren’t always available. If you want to avoid being the star of a scary story, some basic preparation is necessary. With a charged jump starter in your trunk, you’ll never have to worry about getting stranded with a dead battery. But it can be frightening and risky to depend on the charity of a stranger to jump your car. First of all, not many people will stop; second of all, they may have ulterior motives. To close out National Preparedness Month, let’s discuss how to use a portable jump starter. Some are even equipped with built-in air compressors to fill up tires that are low on air. Keep in mind that this will drain the battery power. Remember to periodically charge your portable jump starter. This often happens when headlights or the ignition switch is left on while the car is not running. If the headlights are dim or don’t turn on at all, the battery is probably dead. Bright headlights usually signify that something else is the problem. If the dashboard lights don’t flicker or come on at all, your problem might be with the ignition switch. Try jump starting the car and if the car dies again soon after, it’s probably the alternator. Portable Jump Starters Vehicle battery chargers normally plug into a household outlet (110-120 volt AC) in order to recharge a battery. They normally take several hours to two days to get a full charge. This can be important to have if you use your vehicle sporadically or only during certain times of the year. While pretty useless in the event of a roadside breakdown, they are able to charge up your battery when you get home, saving you money and inconvenience down the road. They don’t need to be plugged into an outlet.

They also don’t re-charge your battery, but rather provide the necessary amperage to crank the engine and start the vehicle. Once the engine is on, the alternator will charge the battery and power the electrical system. If you are only going to have one, get a portable unit; however, an at-home plug-in unit can be useful and cost effective. As a result, they must be periodically recharged. These jump starter batteries will lose their charge more quickly if left in the car during hot and cold weather. We recommend charging your battery booster packs before going on a long trip. Simply insert the power adapter into an outlet and charge the battery until the light indicates a complete charge. If you are not 100% certain what you are doing, call roadside assistance or a towing service. And always read your owner’s manual first! In the highly unlikely event that your vehicle has a positive ground (very rare), the jump starting instructions will be different. Also, some manufacturers do not allow jump-starts. Make sure it matches the jump starter’s output voltage. This is normally a 12-volt supply. Remove any excessive corrosion before attaching the cables. The positive charger clamp is red and the negative charger clamp is black. Choose an area on the car’s frame or engine block, far away from the battery, carburetor and fuel lines. Never use fuel lines, engine rocker covers, or the intake manifold as grounding points! If the car won’t turn on after the first attempt, wait around 2-3 minutes to try again. You may need a new battery if the car won’t start after 4 or 5 attempts. Only then should you try to improve the connection. Now, safely store the portable jump starter. Now you can go home to safety. Most portable jump starters will plug directly into an AC outlet. Recharge the unit for at least 3 hours. Some units will require 12-24 hours for a complete charge. Leave the charger on overnight. Always read the manufacturer instructions for proper use.

If the battery is overheating, stop charging until it has had time to cool off. Overheating the battery can be dangerous and damaging. There is a risk of electrocution and battery explosions. Are vertical tank air compressors better than horizontal tanks. I've had a car in storage for nearly 10 years and decided recently to go and see how it was holding up. When I took the protective cover off the car, it looked great, but 2 of the expensive tires I had purchased before putting it in storage were flat, and the battery was completely dead. I was more than concerned that the engine would not turn over, even with a power supply, and there was no compressor or power source in sight. I was about ready to leave when a young man walked into the garage and said he had some things in storage there as well. He looked at my tires and asked if I would like to ad some air. Within a minute, one of the tires was inflated, and then to my surprise, he proceeded to inflate the second tire. I thanked him, and he asked me if I wanted to try and kick the engine over. I couldn't believe that portable unit had inflated 2 tires, and wasn't expecting the car to turnover anyway. The battery was located under the back seat, and it was really dark in the storage area. He flipped a switch, lit up the entire battery compartment, and attached the clamps. As soon as he did, the door open signal began to beep, and every light in the car was illuminated. After pumping the gas pedal a few times and turning the key, that baby fired up.I mean right now. When I asked him where he had purchased it, he said it was given to him as a gift. After hours of scouring the web, I finally found one through Wal-Mart's Site-to-Store.

There were so many other more expensive units available on the web that I could have purhased, but I had seen this one in action. I now carry it with me in my car at all times. You never know when you'll need it, or when you'll have a chance to return the favor to someone else. This unity is truely unbelieveable. I know because I've seen it work in a vey tough situation, and I've used it myself. I aso pumped up the tires on my wife's bike. Now she' using it too. I had been having alot of problems with needed my car jummped due to bad wiring(now fixed) and was using jumper cables alot. My parents decided that since I have a small child I needed to be able to get done what needed to be done with starting my car and they bought me this product. I read the instructions and charged it for the time stated and have used it may times. It is simple to use and works great. It is also conveinant to charge your cell phone if you have no plug avaliable due to the USB port on it. I have also had the experience to be able to use the compressor to inflate a tire on my car and it also works great. I would recommend this product to everyone looking for a great jump starter at a great price. I've used it on 4CY honda's and Ford e350's and it allways does the job. On bigger cars and trucks it takes about 2 minutes before you can try and crack. All you have to do is let it sit for a few minutes and let it do it's thing.
